About the Charity

The Charity operates three air ambulance helicopters which covers an area of 8,000 square miles and11 counties. This enables the paramedics to reach all parts of our region within 19 minutes and treat patients in the critical golden hour. Your County Air Ambulance carries out approximately 2,000 missions each year and has completed in excess of 20,000 missions since it commenced in 1991. The charity relies on people and organisations like you to raise in excess of £3 million every year to operate this valuable service. History so far

May 1991 In the air
The formal launch of 'Air 5' at Hagley Hall the service operated five days per week from Halfpenny Green Airport.

October 1991 Keeping Going
The aircraft was relocated to RAF Cosford to improve the facilities.

April 1992 Spreading the Message
A major publicity campaign was launched to emphasise the benefits of the Air Ambulance.

March 1993 A New Identity
'Air 5' is renamed County Air Ambulance to recognise the variety of counties covered across the region.

May 1995 Extending the Service
Ten hours and seven day operations starts.

May 1997 A Motorway First
The second helicopter moves to Strensham Services Area.

September 1998 New facilities
New Visitor centre and operational base provided at RAF Cosford.

November 1999 Moving East
The third helicopter is introduced at Nottingham East Midlands Airport operating five days a week.

May 2001 New Generation
Introduction of EC135 'new generation' helicopter - the first in England as an air ambulance.

October 2003 Improving Care
All aircraft are equipped with new medical equipment.

October 2004 Week in, week out
East Midlands Aircraft extends to seven days a week.

April 2005 On the Right Road
New long term agreement for aircraft provision includes new permanent EC 135 commissioned at Strensham.

November 2005 New Heights
The charity reaches another milestone as the service achieves its 20,000th mission.

May 2006 Completing the Hat Trick
The charity celebrates its 15th anniversary with the delivery of a New EC135 helicopter to Nottingham East Midlands Airport, bringing the fleet to three modern aircraft.

Areas covered

Your County Air Ambulance covers 11 counties and an area of 8,000 square miles. Your service covers the most diverse terrain in the United Kingdom, covering cities to villages; farming, industrial and commercial sites; seven motorways, major trunk roads and thousands of miles of rural roads. Our three helicopters are based in three locations, at RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton, Strensham Motorway Service Area, just past junction 8 off the northbound M5, and at East Midlands Airport on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border. These locations are ideal to allow the paramedics reach all parts of the region within 19 minutes and 80 percent of the region within 8 minutes flying time. Items may be donated to the charity of either new or second-hand origin. New items may be used in raffles, auctions etc, that may be organised by our many fundraisers. Used items may be distributed to charity shops that raise funds for the appeal.

Take part in an adventure activity
