image of the Pilots

Pilots
There are two highly experienced twin-engined helicopter pilots are allocated to each of the aircraft and work on a shift basis. The pilots are responsible for the safety of the crew, the patient and the aircraft, with the ultimate decision if is safe for the helicopter to take off or to land, irrespective of the medical emergency. They use their experience, skill and judgement to cope with a wide variety of conditions and difficult terrain.

image of the Paramedics

Paramedics
The air paramedics are fully trained ambulance paramedics who volunteer to undertake a two year tour of duty on the air ambulance. There are more than 20 applicants for each single vacancy. Before the final paramedics are selected to join the aircrew, they are assessed on maths, logic, clinical exams, fitness testing with RAF Physical Training Instructors, team and problem solving exercises/interviews. Those selected go on to the specialised aircrew training at RAF Cosford, followed by three operational training tours with an experienced aircrew instructor. As it is 30-40% more stressful being an air paramedic compared to their normal duties, they do one week in three on the helicopter and return to their normal land ambulance duties for the other weeks.
